Adopted Storage : 

Marshmallow has brought up a new exciting feature called Adopted Storage, with this we can set our sdcard as  an internal storage and store all our applications data, media, audio, videos etc into it. Now you can increase your internal storage as much as you want and no more breaking your head down with “Low space” warning messages.

Lets see how to use it :

Insert and set it as internal storage :

Insert —–> setup (from notification)——> set as internal/portable storage

• Insert the sdcard into your mobile.
• You get a notification that your sdcard is detected with 2 options – setup and eject.
• On selecting setup you can see two options : Use as portable storage and Use as internal storage and you can choose whatever you want.

In case if you skip the notification then go through the following steps :

Settings  —> Storage & USB –> sdcard –> Settings (from menu) –> Format as internal

• Open settings app and select Storage & USB
• Now you can find your inserted sdcard name, select it.
• select settings from menu
• You can find options such as eject, format, format as internal, then select it as format as internal
• You get a warning of erase and format only on selecting it you can set it as internal.

Migrate Data to your sdcard :

Settings  —> Storage & USB —> sdcard —-Migrate Data (from menu)

• Open settings app and select Storage & USB.
• Now you can find your inserted sdcard name, select it.
• Select Migrate Data from menu.
• You can find move data screen, select move data.

Advantages of Adopted Storage:

• It is easy to use.
• Your sdcard is more secure : Once you migrate your phone data into sdcard it gets encrypted and that cannot be decrypted into any other mobile i.e your sdcard cannot be used in any other mobile until you erase the whole data and format it. In this way your data is completely secured.
• No root access required – You can directly use sdcard and migrate data into it.

Disadvantages of Adopted Storgage : 

• Internal storage isn’t usable for media – After migrating data , for suppose you connect your mobile to PC then you will not be able to transfer audio, videos etc into your internal storage.
• Sdcard will not work in any other devices until we erase whole data and format it.
• Sdcard is slower than internal memory.
