Trek to Rainbow Waterfalls - Meghalaya

Breathtaking Trekking Trail - Reborn to stronger and wiser version

What would you be to? where you had no idea of the destination, the only thing you can see is never ending steps to reach out to some destination and left with no option to halt or hold on to!!

At times oblivious to what truly are we capable of, in the very moment subduing one such trepidation you felt are inept at confronts you to a stronger and wiser version within. Such moments are nothing more than a magical shine you cherish. This shine has reached out my eyes yet another time remembering of one such day which i am sure will always be seated in the favourite corner of my treasured memories. Yes this is the day at the place which still sends a thrilling pulse through me.

How to reach Rainbow Waterfalls

Inorder to reach Rainbow waterfall you need to start from tyrna village in Cherrapunji and trek all over the way to Double Decker Bridge in Nongriat village, thereafter its around 2hrs trek to disorganized stones and all way from mountain to reach Rainbow Waterfalls.

If you have missed, please do read my earlier blog of Trek to Double Decker Living Root Bridge

From my experience, I would suggest you to plan a day or 2 stay at Nongriat Village, take a day to trek to Double Decker Living Root bridge rest and plan another day for Rainbow Waterfall. Its takes around 3-4 hrs (around 3500 steps) trail to Double Decker Living Root Bridge and 2hrs to Rainbow Waterfall one way, the other way round on the same day gets tough as in Meghalaya it gets dark by 5 pm and it takes strenuous efforts to trek for so long in dark, which is all day long trek.

I as usual landing into unpremeditated trip yet again got to be in a place where tragedies rouse. Well then, the adventure and fun of attaining your proficient side  comes through the greater gifts inherent in tragedies. We had a whole day trekking to Rainbow waterfall and getting back to the stay, let me walk you down through this breathtaking experience to get you see how i trailed up the never ending steps and came out shining.

Mountain trekking to Rainbow falls

All way trekking through 3500 steps to Double Decker Bridge, taken aback by the beauteous piece of nature, we  realized we had to go long way back and stepped ahead to rainbow waterfall. But this time there were no steps, all i could see were stones, rocks to climb into deep lush forest. It was full of challenge and this time it was ascent which reminded me of how i had to get back through this and way back all in ascent. At times slipping and falling down climbing the mountain, we somehow crossed half way and to our surprise we were finished with water we carried damn!! We could already sense how difficult it is going to get walking the other half day without water. We were already thirsty and kept asking for it for the few on our way, to our surprise one walking towards us with a kid(may be 10 years) and at a distance offered the bottle one-fourth filled orange juice, we refused as we could see the only bottle in his hand and also he had to get back. He kept insisting adding he is going to stay back at nongriat at a distance, then no matter how near it was it was much more needed to the small kid who was walking. A heartwarming gesture, isn't this something truly amazing part of the trip we carry with us, to cross some amazing people whom you have never seen and will never see and you cannot tag them as strangers too as they have just taught you to be at peace with notion "Good people do exist".

Mountain trek to Rainbow waterfalls

Rainbow Waterfalls

I was climbing climbing and climbing there were no steps and full of disorganized stones to walk to. As the time was getting closer to dusk, i could clearly hear the ticking of clock in my head, this tick-tick motion in a second faded away with this view straight of a fantasy land. After walking for around 2 hours, here we go the rainbow waterfall forming rainbow where the water hits down.

It was amazing but before getting down to this we picked maggi and chai to burn our hunger, the person there was about to close it.. Phew!! we got it there at right time. Well, for once we could get somewhere at the right time, though they were done with the water bottles, he then seemed to be a total savior. Post to this we walked down  the waterfall which was again all way down through rocks. Finally the toughest thing we could see ahead was  getting back, we were at double speed by the time we reached back double decker it was already dark. My mind whirled up in thoughts of whether to stay back at nongriat village,  whether we could manage to get a stay walking to that direction,  muddled up with these,  at some corner of my mind i knew if i stopped i can by no chance walk the other day back. My legs were already shivering we had turned on the flash light and kept walking through flowing water. We could already see no one in our way back.

Jump and die or get back? 3500 Steps Ascent !!

It was already gloomy and a walk of 3-4 hrs minimum in ascent, we were extremely exhausted and also carrying the heavy bag, my new shoes at its worst with all spots and torn. After a while we weren't able to walk a step on those never ending steps, could barely see anything and the only thing we had there was some sounds from that murky forest a total live experience to a horror part , this time, the voice of nature reached me the other way round. Surely fear is the biggest hindrance, stuck to which we block and tie up our own wings. I totally gave up and after every 10 steps, i fell down gasping. It was then a time we realized why people were carrying stick along. We were done with the water and could see no one for help, it was total dark and scary both within and out.

The way back finding ray of hope in the darkness, there came a state to neither being able to go back nor step ahead that actually landed me into a thought better i jump and die here instead of walking which made them laugh at me. I was literally scrawling to the steps with no support and both sides were just deep down perpetual darkness into forest, our steps were here and there as once gets when high haha!!

We too exhausted and unable to walk came across light at a distance and picked up the pace in pain taking it the destination but to our surprise were some tribal singing as it was Christmas time, we wished them and found no luck of water as they were too walking down to their homes which was way far but suggested us that we will get to see some tribal leaving upwards after a while. We picked up the energy from them and started walking then crawling falling we finally reached some tribal who just seemed another form of god right then helped us with water and told it was just little to reach.

A magical shine

I was no way hoping i could reach with this enduring pain in leg, no words can explain it. We slowly moving ahead with at times mistaken for the lights as destination, finally came across local people who told we were almost there. We could see a light and i was then hoping not to be mistaken, this ray of hope got some energy within and we could pick the pace, there those last few steps were happy exhaust. No words of mine can get you see the true happiness of seeing the destination and very few at times we hold that shine in our eyes, we got the destination and fell to kiss it. We went walking whole day from 7:00 am to 9:30 p.m all way trekking be it steps in ascent/descent, stones, rocks, mountain.

At times you have to die little inside to reborn to a much stronger and wiser version of you.

Back to Stay

It was a total worth it adventure, the first thing with the word from anything of this trip reminds me of this day. We in the dark got back to the stay and asked the owner for food who prepared it, people at cherrapunji were a true gem i must say. The pain in my leg was a total disaster and the only thing i could think of is sleeping. The other day i woke up to see big black spots i.e blood clot all over my leg, with this when i moved ahead the next day to yet another beautiful places Dawki and Shnongpdeng, we got through some hilarious incidents reminded to which we cannot stop laughing even now.
