Laitlum Canyons Meghalaya
If heaven exists on earth then this is the place, yes Laitlum Grand Canyons is surely a stairway to heaven. The place surrounded with the mist that swirls and moves with the wind seems blanketing the entire canyon in imperial white shroud will surely leave a magical impact on you.
Laitlum means "The End of Hills" is a perfect place that has all got to offer you with inner peace. A place away from the crowd and noise with endless diverse mountains, mist swirling from the lush valley is something one can spend hours and hours never wanting to come back.
The place completely justify the name Meghalaya - "abode of clouds", its only you between the clouds lost in this serene piece of nature. Laitlum canyons is a place of gem where words may fall short to describe the truly amazing experience of being at this place.
Sunset at Laitlum Canyons
It seemed to me exactly that dreamy place which i always keep watching with jaw dropped from the window seat while flying in plane and finally i can be to this fantasy land as long as i wanted. It was time of December i have been here, i did spent long hours and fortunate i could see the sunset in this beautiful place which then did added a bonus.
If you are short on time its worth missing one or the other place from the list and adding this perfect picturesque place in. Its too deep and can be slippery at edge so just be careful and keep distance from the edge.
Location - Laitlum canyons 21kms from Shillong in Meghalaya
Timings - Dawn to Dusk
Plan of the trip (Budget Friendly)
How to reach
You can reach Guwahati by air and take a cab to Shillong, hire a vehicle bike/car or cab from police bazar(place in Shillong) to laitlum canyons. The canyons are located about 21 Kms south of Shillong which is about a half-hour drive away. From Shillong, one must turn east onto Laitumukrah point, then turn right at Demsein long bus stop, then take a couple of left turns to reach Swalad bus stop. Head on NH 44 followed by a right turn to Smit Road move straight to Jongsha Mawkynrew road and Unmed Road, after which one can spot the Canyons.
Transportation
You can hire bike/car from Shillong police bazar as its a big city when compared to other in Meghalaya and you could find difficulty in getting it later. Instead of booking vehicles or depending on cabs i would recommend to hire vehicle and drive at your will as in Meghalaya it gets dark soon around 4:30 or 5 pm. The main form of public transport in Meghalaya are sumos. Sumos leave from designated stands too early in the morning from each town and city and only when full with 10 people, so if you opt for sumos you need to figure out the timings from localites so that you dont miss on the only sumos for that specific day.
